Rose from a black-board chalk

>> Sunday, December 14, 2008

This was my second rose carved from a chalk. I lost the first one I made. The rose itself did not turn out as good as the first one, but the first sculpture was without a pot, and I think this one looks better overall. It is amongst my favorite sculptures.

In case you were wondering, the stalk is not made of chalk (obviously!). I made from broken paperclip. Thanks for looking!

Chalk carving of a face - 1998

This is my first ever chalk sculpture. I made it while sitting in an Anatomy class that was not very exciting. I actually used a scalpel to carve this. It is my favorite sculpture so far. The irregularity of the surface gives it a realistic look. I have often stared at it trying to interpret the expression, but am still not sure I understand.

I had initially painted it using a brown and a black sketch pen. About 4 years later, I repainted the surface to give it the current look.

What do you think of his expression? Please post your comment.

Princess of all sculptures

I agree the face is not that of a princess. However the overall look of the sculpture made me name it 'Princess of all sculptres'. What do you think?

Thanks for looking!

Happy and Sad Chalk Sculpture

Technically speaking, this may not be the best of sculptures . I think I messed up the lips of the sad face. Also if you notice, I broke the left eyebrow of the happy face. What I like a lot about this piece, is the yellow-blue-orange-red-green combination of the happy face. I think it looks pretty. What do you think?

Chinese man: Incomplete

This Chinese man has been lying incomplete since the July of 2008. (What a pediatric residency can do to a wannabe artist!). I have the feeling though, if and when I do complete this one, it is going to be one of my best pieces. Stay tuned...

Grief

I was inspired to do this carving by a painting I saw somewhere. The painting showed a sad young lady. I ended up with a middle aged sad bald man with no ears. Nonetheless I like this one. Comments???

Totem pole

Although I named this piece, totem pole, it was not really inspired by totem poles. I set out to carve a human face and this is what I ended up with. I love his crown...or what ever that golden thing extending from his nose upwards is!

On second thoughts, I can probably rename it 'the king of all sculptures'.
